A new version of PhotoTeleport has been released!

The biggest feature in this release is the possibility of specifying a maximum image size, which will make PhotoTeleport scale down images before uploading them. This can dramatically improve upload times :-)

Also, in this release:

• the list of files to be uploaded can now be passed via the command line
• FTP: use a newer SSH library, compatible with more servers
• VK: implement posting to user’s wall
• update the Facebook plugin to the latest Facebook policies: posting photos to a user profile is no longer allowed :-(
• Flickr: allow posting to photostream, without any specific set
• DeviantArt: add “category” selector
• plugins now remember the last used settings

Yes, it’s been a lazy summer, with no news from PhotoTeleport; but that doesn’t mean that we’ve been sitting idle! The development has indeed slowed down a bit in these months, but a big feature has been implemented and just needs some more testing before being released: image resizing.

But this post is about another piece of news: the latest AppImage released for Linux is now compatible with Manjaro Linux, so we urge all Manjaro fans out there to give it a try and start uploading your photos everywhere. Don’t be shy! :-)

A new version of PhotoTeleport has been released!

The FTP plugin which was initially released in version 0.5 for Linux only is now also available for all OS X and Windows users.

It has also been vastly improved, because now it not only supports the bare FTP protocol, but also SFTP (also known as “cp over SSH”), which is a protocol supported by most web hosting providers. That said, the plugin is still beta-quality, and there are a few rough corners which will be smoothed out in future versions.

Here’s the full changelog for the 0.6 version:

• FTP plugin added to OS X and Windows builds
• Added SSH support to the FTP plugin
• Flickr: fix uploads with multi-line descriptions
• VK: fix default album computation when changing target page
• Fix a memory corruption issue when reading file metadata

More changes are already lined up for inclusion into the next release. But for the time being, enjoy version 0.6 and let me know should you find any issues!

A few days ago Facebook announced quite harsh restrictions on its publishing APIs: if we take the announcement to the letter, it means that publishing photos (and generally, any kind of content) from a desktop application will become impossible.

These changes will come into effect on August 1st, but don’t despair: first of all, it may be that some alternative API will appear in the meantime and replace the deprecated ones; and secondly, the announced changes don’t affect the content published to a Facebook page. In other words, if you are using PhotoTeleport to publish your photos to a Facebook page, nothing will change for you.

Let’s see how the situation evolves; in the worst situation, PhotoTeleport will lose its ability to post content into your own photostream; this might therefore be a good time to create yourself a nice Facebook page for your photography activity, and that will continue to work even after this summer. Time will tell…

A new plugin is making its appearance in this new PhotoTeleport release: we now have a simple FTP plugin, to upload your photos into your website staging area, or into your personal backup cloud.

The plugin is very simple, it just takes care of uploading your photos to the FTP server of your choice. The only available option is the selection of the destination directory, but on the other hand one shouldn’t need much more other than this. It’s FTP, after all :-)

Please note that, unfortunately, this new plugin might be much less useful than you might think: it only supports the bare FTP protocol, no SFTP or SCP. So, in order to use this plugin you need to configure your server to accept FTP connections. But do not dispair: support for SSH servers is also in the roadmap and, as a matter of fact, it’s something I plan to work on for the next release.

If FTP can be of any use to you, you are welcome to grab PhotoTeleport 0.5 from the main page. Again, like last time, the 0.5 version is available as a Linux AppImage only; if you need it for Windows or OS X, please let me know (via our Twitter account, maybe), and I should be able to find some time to make a release for you. Once the plugin will grow SSH support, then I’ll certainly make a release for all the supported platforms.

Meanwhile, welcome back to the ’90s! :-)

During the last few weeks I’ve been working on a feature which is especially helpful for those photographers who — like myself — don’t disdain spending considerable amounts of time adding metadata information to their photos before uploading.

PhotoTeleport is now going to save your current session (including the list of photos, their metadata, the upload status, etc.) so that if you accidentally or even intentionally close the application, the next time you start it you will be given the opportunity to resume the upload from where you left it.

Linux only

Given that producing the Windows and OS X versions takes quite some time, and PhotoTeleport developing cycle is quite fast, I decided to release this version for Linux only. However, if I receive enough requests (for example, via our Twitter account), I’ll certainly honour them.

And don’t worry: I didn’t abandon Windows and OS X users: PhotoTeleport will continue to be regularly released for thos platforms, too. It will just happen with a lower frequency.

PhotoTeleport has gone through the Apple review process and is now available for sale on the Apple Store!

Why would you care, when you can download it for free from this website?

Well, you probably don’t need to care, since even if you really cared about supporting the project you could anyway make a donation (you can find the links in the “About” menu of the application); however, having it on the Apple Store is a way to increase its popularity, because being in the store gives PhotoTeleport much higher visibility than what it can get by just being advertised in this website. :-)

It was with quite some surprise that I realized that uploading pictures to Facebook was working only for me, and not for anybody else! As a matter of fact, there was a misconfiguration of the Facebook authentication which caused the upload to fail for anybody but me: it was working for me only because my account was registered in Facebook as the owner of PhotoTeleport, and therefore it had greater permissions than those granted to other users.

Anyway, you probably don’t want to be annoyed with these details, so let me just tell you that if you encountered issues with uploading to Facebook, this new version of PhotoTeleport is right for you!

From the main page you can download the 0.3 version for Linux, MacOS X and Windows. This is mostly a bugfix release I pushed out as soon as I noticed that Facebook uploads were not working, but it also contains a couple of other meaningful changes:

• Facebook upload working (I guess you got this by now ;-) )
• When switching to another Facebook account, make sure all relevant data is refreshed
• Update VK plugin to latest API
• Fix the application name in OS X
• Show version number in About screen

Please give it a try! And don’t be shy to let me know in case you see something not working properly. PhotoTeleport is in its very early stages, so its user base is very small: so, don’t assume that other people must have already notified me of the problem you are experiencing: you might really be the very first one to notice it!

A new beta version of PhotoTeleport has been released!

From the main page you can download a new version (0.2) for Linux, MacOS X and Windows. New in this version:

• Added a “Help” menu with an “About” page
• Several fixes to the tag editor:
  • Make sure that no data get lost during navigation
  • Animate the control when shrinking its height (void jumps)
  • Improved visuals
• DeviantArt: use a different authorization flow (reduces frequency of reauthentication)

A new AppImage for Linux is available for download at the main page!

This version brings a change in the packaging format only: we have bundled the SSL libraries into the AppImage in order to fix a compatibility issue that was uncovered when running PhotoTeleport under ArchLinux (but that could affect other distributions as well). We have also included a newer version of Qt (5.9.4), but this is unlikely to bring any changes to the program’s functionality. The code of PhotoTeleport itself has not been changed since the first version.

A new beta with some important changes will be out in the near future; but meanwhile, if you are a Linux user who could not use PhotoTeleport at all, please have a try at this build.
